[Invite-only] Beyond the Connection: What We Build on Top of Interoperable Payments - Powered by Tencent

Cross-border payments are rapidly becoming interoperable: a traveller can now pay abroad with the wallet they already trust. Yet that very success has turned connectivity into table stakes rather than a source of margin — and it has exposed the next gap. Money moves across borders; the services built on top of it largely do not.

At the same time, wallet and banking platforms across the region are all moving into services beyond payments — ordering, booking, loyalty, credit and merchant tooling — each building its own ecosystem, largely from scratch, and each confined to its own market. Merchants, meanwhile, are asking for reach without rebuilding for every market they enter.

This boardroom starts from what institutions have actually shipped, then tests what it would take for the service layer to interoperate the way payments now do: what participants would open, what they would need in return, and which commercial, risk and regulatory conditions would have to hold. It is structured so that participants state the principle of reciprocity in their own words, before anyone in the room proposes a model to them.
