"The Climate Data Roundtable: Interoperability, Access, and Verification to Track and Finance Net Zero" by KPMG and Elevandi unveils content of discussions held at the eponym roundtable at Point Zero Forum 2023.
The discussion, moderated by Anton Ruddenklau, Global Head of Fintech and Innovation at KPMG International, brought together a distinguished panel of twelve representatives from international organisations, regulators, data providers, financial institutions, and NGOs. This roundtable served as an open platform for fostering productive discussions and steering tangible outcomes in the pursuit of net-zero goals.
The report encapsulates insights from the event, highlighting the pivotal role of data in facilitating a seamless transition to a net-zero economy. Key challenges were identified, including the absence of regional platforms, the lack of standardised data formats, data scarcity, and the difficulties in collecting upstream data. The participants collectively agreed to focus their efforts on major emitters and to create a market utility for climate data, streamlining access and utilisation.
The roundtable also emphasised that sustainability represents a business opportunity for financial institutions. Integrating sustainability principles into strategies can provide a competitive advantage while positively impacting the environment. Bridging the gap between the real economy and the financial sector, especially through collaboration between public and private entities, was identified as essential to accelerate the journey towards a net-zero economy.
